The true essence of a corporation is its people. Pearson Software Recruiting Specialists aggressively supports and promotes equal opportunity hiring of people with disabilities, aboriginals, visible minorities and women. The diversity of our internal staff reflects our commitment to equal opportunity hiring. With our pool of talented candidates from diverse backgrounds, we can help you continue to build a company culture that supports and affirms the diverse people who make up your human capital.

Our Diversity Mandate

We provide a link between employers seeking to enrich their workforce diversity and a pool of diverse candidates who are searching for an opportunity to perform to their full potential. Our mandate is to help employers embrace the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. As an equal opportunity employer, we pride ourselves in creating an employment environment that supports and encourages the abilities of all persons regardless of race, color, gender, age, sexual orientation, citizenship or disability. This commitment extends to all areas of employment practices including hiring, compensation, benefits, promotion, training, and layoff or termination.

Diversity can help organizations: identify and capitalize on opportunities to improve products and services; attract, retain, motivate and utilize human resources effectively; improve quality of decision making at all organizational levels; and reap the many benefits of being perceived as a socially conscious and progressive organization. These benefits should be realized in an improved bottom line and maximization of shareholder value (according to Dr. Jeffrey Gandz in "A Business Case for Diversity").

Advantages of Diversity Hiring

People with different backgrounds, skills, attitudes and experiences bring fresh ideas and perceptions. Effective management of diversity in the workplace enables employers to:

  • Meet the requirements of Canada & United States Employment Equity Act ;
  • Recruit and retain employees with the skill sets and mindsets needed to compete in the global marketplace ;
  • Increase staff retention rates ;
  • Decrease absenteeism ;
  • Access larger pool of potential employees ;
  • Offset the affects of an aging workforce ;
  • Consequences of Ignoring Diversity

    Ignoring diversity issues costs time, money, and efficiency. Some of the consequences can include:

  • " Inability to attract and retain talented people of all kinds ;
  • " Complaints and legal actions ;
  • " Poor retention of women and people of color, resulting in lost investments in recruitment and training ;
  • " Missing out on the new competitive edge enjoyed by companies that foster a diverse workforce ;
  • " Accommodating Persons with Disabilities ;
  • Studies have shown that the environmental modifications required to accommodate a person with a disability bring hidden returns to the employer. These modifications not only benefit employees with disabilities, they make the employer's premises accessible to clients or customers with disabilities, thus opening up a broader market for the company.

    According to Shenaz Modi from the Employment Equity Office at Ryerson Polytechnic University, eighty percent of accommodation costs were less than $1,000.

    According to a survey of US employers, "by accommodating employees with disabilities, 42 percent of companies reported accruing benefits greater than $10,000, according to the survey. On average, for every dollar spent on accommodations, companies earned $15.34 in benefit."

    Not all accommodations require monetary outlays. For example:

  • Job modifications including changes to duties, schedules, and conditions of the job
  • Job restructuring
  • Flexible hours
  • Working from home
